MINSK – Belarusian security agencies have helped foil terror attacks in Belarus, Russia and several European countries, President Alexander Lukashenko said at an event marking the 100th anniversary of national security agencies on Dec.15.

“It should be noted that many present day challenges can only be overcome in concert. The Belarusian KGB [State Security Committee] is developing practical cooperation with agencies in dozens of countries, primarily with our Russia, the post-Soviet republics, and elsewhere. The high level of partnership enables successful implementation of joint measures. Our intelligence led to the foiling of several attempts to commit terror attacks in Russia, several European states and in our country,” Lukashenko was quoted by the BelTA state news agency as saying.

The geography and intensity of security agencies’ communications are expanding, which is testament to international recognition of Belarus’ important role in providing regional and, in some cases, global security.

“Today our security services are facing new challenges. One of the chief ones is counterterrorism. The world is like a stirred-up ant-heap. Borders are being crossed by crowds of refugees, some of whom are disguised fanatics ready to kill peaceful citizens and sow chaos. Members of international terrorist organizations are regularly caught in the flow transiting our republic,” Lukashenko said.

“There is also illegal arms trafficking, which is spreading quickly across the globe. Regrettably, we are not insured against it either. We must be extremely vigilant and by no means let this arsenal infiltrate our borders,” the president said.
