MINSK – Alexander Lukashenko said he believes the president should be the main inspector supervising human rights observance in Belarus, the presidential press service said.

“Although we do not have the post [of ombudsman], I always say: human rights – the right to a good life, work, education, healthcare, [the right] to receive information, media freedom, freedom of speech, etc. – will only be observed if the president is the main inspector of human rights observance,” Lukashenko said on Feb. 2 while swearing in the republic’s Constitutional Court Judge Viktor Ryabtsev on Feb. 2.

“And you should stand by me. We should ensure the observance of the main rights of our citizens using the power of the administration. It’s the main thing,” the president said.
