You're reading: Lukashenko promises revolutionary liberalization of Belarusian business

MINSK – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko fears the appearance of “a chaotic situation” in his country after the adoption of revolutionary decisions on liberalizing business.

“We will adopt truly revolutionary decisions (to liberalize conditions for conducting business) but I am afraid of creating some chaotic situation as a result, some Brownian motion and losing controllability in the economy,” Lukashenko said in his annual message to the nation and National Assembly in Minsk on Friday.

State control and the responsibility of business for its work should remain, the president said.

“So as much as needed for it should be done for business, so that it could function, that it could start an enterprise, work without looking back and know that nobody will approach it unlawfully and start extorting bribes,” Lukashenko said.

“In this respect you can count on my support,” he said.

“We will remove this oppression. But business will bear responsibility for everything,” Lukashenko said.
