CHISINAU – Moldovan President Igor Dodon has said that Defense Ministry forces will be used in managing the critical situation with the coronavirus pandemic.

“I signed a decree allowing the military to take part in corresponding actions to additionally support government efforts to fight the pandemic,” Dodon wrote on his Facebook page on March 24.

He noted that the Defense Ministry should be prepared to share its logistical resources to support the medical personnel involved in managing the crisis.

“We can be speaking of the assignment of hospital places, the involvement of military medics and means of transportation for the needs of the authorities and other support,” Dodon said.

The military will also have to help the police and carabineers to carry out measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Among other things we are speaking of patrolling public places… Where necessary the military will also render support to the elderly so that they would not have to leave their homes. Depending on the developments we will decide on other measures to restrict the spread of the virus in the nearest future,” Dodon said.

Moldova introduced a state of emergency in relation to the coronavirus pandemic. It has closed down all educational institutions, banned entry to foreigners and as of March 16 stopped air traffic with all countries.

Since March 7, the coronavirus infection has been confirmed in 109 people, including five residents of Transdniestria. One person died, two recovered and 10 are in grave condition.
