You're reading: Money supply in Kazakhstan down 0.1% in May and down 2.3% in five months

ALMATY – Kazakhstan’s money supply narrowed by 0.1% in May 2017 to 19.449 trillion tenge, the National Bank said.

In January-May 2017, money supply shrunk by 2.3%.

Total cash in circulation grew by 1% in May 2017 to 1.742 trillion tenge (down 0.4% in January-May the same year).

The monetary base expanded by 5.4% to 5.536 trillion tenge in May 2017 and by 7.2% in January-May 2017. The narrow monetary base, excluding fixed-term deposits of second-tier banks with the National Bank, widened by 4.2% in the reporting month to 4.979 trillion tenge and increased by 3.9% from the beginning of the year.

Kazakhstan switched to a free floating exchange rate for the tenge on August 20, 2015.
