Of all the people swept up in the swirling Russia firestorm, it is Paul Manafort who, it is widely agreed, should have known better.

While Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr and even the president himself can make a fair claim to be political novices, Mr Manafort, 68, is a seasoned Washington operator.
