You're reading: Ukraine Completes EU Questionnaire on Europe’s Day

Kyiv has completed the second part of the questionnaire presented to President Volodymyr Zelensky by European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Kyiv alongside EU’s top diplomat Joseph Borrell.

“I had a video call with the EC’s President Ursula von der Leyen, showing her the completed second part of the questionnaire, which is instrumental for receiving EU membership. Thank you for the clear signals of support on this important path for us,” Zelensky wrote on his official Telegram handle on May 9.

Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna added that the European Commission has highly assessed the responses to the first part of the questionnaire.

“Ukraine completed the 2nd part of 🇪🇺 membership questionnaire. This true ‘book of 🇺🇦 statehood” in 9 volumes has been handed over symbolically to

the EU Commission on #EuropeDay. We continue working with 🇪🇺 partners to ensure a positive decision on 🇺🇦 EU candidate status in June,” tweeted Stefanishyna.

The completion was made on May 9 when Europe marks the anniversary of Europe’s Day and the Schuman Declaration.

On May 9, 1950, the late Prime Minister of France Robert Schuman gave a speech about the need to merge the economies of France and Germany to prevent new wars in Europe.

This declaration, regarded as pivotal, was instrumental for creating the European Union, with Schuman underscoring that “Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity and the pooling of coal and steel production… will change the destinies of those regions which have long been devoted to the manufacture of munitions of war, of which they have been the most constant victims.’’

Available in all languages spoken in the European Union, it was also translated from French into Ukrainian in 2020.
