You're reading: UN General Assembly approves resolution urging Russia to withdraw troops from Transdniestria

UN, NEW YORK CITY – The UN General Assembly approved on June 22 a resolution calling for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Moldova.

The resolution was supported by 64 countries, 14 voted against it, and 83 abstained.

The document urges Russia “to complete, unconditionally and without further delay, the orderly withdrawal of the Operational Group of Russian Forces” from Transdniestria in accordance with the relevant decisions of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and as agreed at its summit in Istanbul in 1999.

The resolution was submitted by Moldova and co-sponsored by Canada, Georgia, Romania, Ukraine, and Estonia.
