The Dutch coalition government collapsed today due to disagreements over migration policy. Geert Wilders, leader of the nationalist populist right-wing Party for Freedom (PVV), withdrew his support for the coalition, citing insufficient backing from other parties for his migration ultimatum. A central demand of this ultimatum was a complete halt to asylum immigration.
The coalition partners right-wing liberal VVD, the central party NSC and the populist Farmer-Citizen Movement regret the decision of Geert Wilders.
The coalition governed for 11 months, a short and unstable period. The coalition may seek a new partner, but the most likely outcome is that new elections will be held this year.
The Netherlands-Ukraine relations
The Netherlands has been a staunch ally of Ukraine. It is one of the top providers of support to Kyiv, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of GDP, according to the Ukraine Support Tracker.
The coalition, which recently collapsed, had consistently supported Ukraine. The biggest party in the last elections was the PVV, which stated in their party program for the elections in 2023 that no more weapons should be provided to Ukraine. Later the PVV adjusted its stance.
If new elections are held, the Netherlands is likely to continue supporting Ukraine, as most political parties favor this stance.
