A major international obstacle course race is coming to the Ukrainian capital this fall – not just as a sporting challenge, but to support the country’s war effort.
On Sept. 13-14, Kyiv will host the “Spartan Trifecta Weekend,” a charity run whose proceeds will go toward purchasing high-speed boats for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR). Organizers announced the initiative at a press conference in Kyiv, attended by Kyiv Post.
The Spartan Trifecta format allows athletes to complete three different races – 5, 10 and 20 kilometers – over two days at the city’s VDNH exhibition grounds. Alongside the main events, there will be children’s races and a Para Race, where wounded veterans and servicemembers compete on the same obstacle courses.
“This is not just about sport. It is about supporting those who defend Ukraine,” said Oleksii Vovk, one of the organizers. “All proceeds will be directed to the HUR.”
The boats in question are designed for both river and sea operations. Fully manufactured in Ukraine, they are valued at Hr.10–20 million ($242,000–$484,000) each depending on equipment, and can be used for tasks ranging from evacuation to providing fire support, said Diana Podolianchuk, head of a charity foundation and co-organizer of the event.
She recalled how Ukrainian intelligence units recently used similar vessels to carry out a successful raid on the Tendrivska Spit in southern Ukraine, destroying Russian positions, electronic warfare systems and radar installations without suffering losses.
“These boats are about mobility and surprise,” said HUR representative Yevhen Yerin. “They allow our special units to act where the enemy least expects it.”
During the press conference, several HUR combat boats unexpectedly pulled up to the quay, where organizers demonstrated their speed and maneuverability to gathered media.
The fundraising campaign, called “Boats for HUR,” highlights the importance of naval mobility as Ukraine adapts to Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion, now in its fourth year.
The Spartan Trifecta Weekend is part of the global Spartan Race series, which attracts endurance athletes from dozens of countries. This is not the first such charity initiative in Kyiv; organizers held a previous Spartan run to support Ukraine’s intelligence services.
