European Parliament President Metsola Arrives in Kyiv to Announce Opening of EU Office

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola arrived in Kyiv to address the Verkhovna Rada and announce the opening of the Parliament’s official representation in Ukraine.

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola arrived in Kyiv on Wednesday morning to reaffirm Europe’s “continued and unwavering support” for Ukraine, her team told Kyiv Post.

Metsola is scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, and Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, as well as with faction and group leaders of the Ukrainian parliament.

Sources in diplomatic circles told Kyiv Post that Metsola plans to emphasize the European Parliament’s support for a “permanent, just, and real peace,” stronger coordinated sanctions against Russia, closer parliamentary cooperation, and advancing Ukraine’s EU membership bid.

She is also expected to address the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, and announce the opening of the European Parliament’s official representation in Kyiv. The office, to be co-located with the EU Delegation, will signal Europe’s increased presence and support on the ground.

In an exclusive interview with Kyiv Post in June 2024, Metsola said: “Ukraine is a top priority for us. The European Parliament fully supports Ukraine’s Peace Formula, which is the only comprehensive framework for a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine. We encourage all international partners to help further this process, and we commend all efforts undertaken in goodwill, to bring this peace process forward.”
