‘Something Good May Be Happening’: Trump Hints at Breakthrough in Ukraine Talks

His remarks came as Ukrainian, US and European officials wrapped up Geneva talks, saying they had drafted a “refined peace framework” and made major progress.

US President Donald Trump hinted on Monday that a breakthrough may be forming in efforts to end the war in Ukraine, posting on Truth Social: “Something good just may be happening.”

His remarks came as Ukrainian, US and European officials wrapped up intensive talks in Geneva, where Kyiv and Washington said they had drafted a “refined peace framework” and made major progress toward a potential deal.

Trump has pushed hard for a settlement, backing a 28-point plan that sparked backlash in Europe for favoring Moscow.

The leaked proposal called for territorial concessions, limits on Ukraine’s military and a permanent ban on joining NATO – key Kremlin demands.

European capitals warned such terms would reward aggression. Negotiators have reworked large portions of the proposal over the weekend in Geneva, narrowing disputes over the size of Ukraine’s army, control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and prisoner exchanges.

But the thorniest questions – territory and Ukraine’s NATO future – were set aside for direct talks between Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump, who are expected to meet soon.

US negotiators privately warned Kyiv that the coming months could be critical and that Ukraine risks losing more territory if the battlefield situation does not improve.

Washington also presented a separate 10-year security pact modelled on NATO’s Article 5, outlining coordinated US and allied support if Russia attacks again.

Zelensky has urged unity as the talks intensify, calling on Ukraine’s political class to “stop the bickering” during what officials describe as a decisive moment.

If Kyiv and Washington finalize the remaining points – and secure European support – US officials plan to take the plan to Moscow.
