Ukraine Holds Anti-Graft Detective in Treason Case Tied to Yanukovych-Era Guard

A Kyiv court has refused to release an anti-corruption detective who has been accused of treason and passing confidential data to a Yanukovych-era guard linked to Russian agents.

A Kyiv district court on Friday denied a request to release Ukrainian anti-corruption detective Viktor Husarov from pre-trial detention.

Husarov, a member of the now-disbanded “D-2” unit from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), is accused of state treason and unauthorized interference in electronic systems, according to a Suspilne correspondent reporting from the courtroom.

Investigators allege that between 2012 and 2015, Husarov transferred confidential data from the Interior Ministry’s restricted ARMOR database to Dmytro Ivantsov, a former bodyguard to ex-President Viktor Yanukovych and an officer with the State Guard Department.

Prosecutors say Husarov continued providing information even after Ivantsov fled to Russian-occupied Crimea in 2014.

Husarov’s defense argues that he believed he was sharing data with a State Guard acquaintance and did not know the individual was cooperating with Russian agents. The defense team also claims the detective’s arrest was politically motivated and intended to pressure NABU.

Husarov has denied all charges. His lawyer asked the court to replace pre-trial detention with nighttime house arrest or a personal obligation to appear before investigators and the court.

Prosecutor Ruslan Izhuk argued that the case against Husarov is well supported and urged the court to keep him in detention. He said investigators are currently examining information about a possible network of Russian agents to which Husarov may have been connected, and that releasing him now could interfere with the investigation.

After the hearing, the investigative judge sided with the prosecution and decided that Husarov should remain in custody.

Husarov was detained on July 22, 2025, and his pre-trial detention was extended on Oct. 16.

Husarov’s relatives and colleagues attended the hearing to show support, including Sentyabr, the father of NABU detective Ruslan Mahamedrasulov, who had also been detained earlier but was released this week.
