Ukrainian attack drones struck two major Russian oil refineries early Saturday morning, Aug. 8, sparking large fires at the Syzran and Ilsky facilities as part of an overnight barrage across multiple Russian regions.
In the Samara region, a massive blaze engulfed the Syzran Oil Refinery. Local residents reported hearing at least ten explosions between 3:50 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. local time, followed by a thick column of black smoke rising from the facility.
Samara region Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev acknowledged a drone attack on “one of the industrial enterprises” in the region but declined to name the facility or detail the extent of the damage, stating only that efforts to mitigate the aftermath were underway.
Independent OSINT analysis by Astra subsequently confirmed the fire at the Syzran refinery.
The Syzran plant, a key asset of the Rosneft group, is a major facility with an annual processing capacity of 8.9 million tons of oil. The refinery has been targeted in previous drone attacks.
Simultaneously, drones struck the Ilsky Oil Refinery in the southern Krasnodar region. The regional operational headquarters claimed the resulting fire was caused by falling drone debris. Authorities reported that five people were injured in the incident and are receiving medical assistance.
The Ilsky refinery is a significant regional supplier with a processing capacity of 6.6 million tons of crude oil per year.
The dual strikes were part of an aerial campaign overnight.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its forces intercepted an astonishing 397 fixed-wing drones across a wide swath of territory, including the Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Penza, Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Tambov, and Tula regions, as well as over occupied Crimea and the Sea of Azov.
AFU Confirms Strikes on Two Russian Oil Refineries and Black Sea Rig
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) confirmed later on Saturday, Aug. 8, that Ukrainian Defense Forces struck two major Russian oil refineries and a Black Sea surveillance post overnight.
According to the military’s statement, the coordinated strikes targeted the Ilsky refinery in the Krasnodar region, the Syzran refinery in the Samara region, and the “Sivash” jack-up drilling rig in the Black Sea.
The AFU stated that the operations aimed to degrade the military-economic potential of the Russian Federation, noting that both refineries are critical suppliers of fuel and petroleum products for the Russian armed forces.
Strikes deepen crisis for Russian logistics
The coordinated refinery strikes follow another deep-strike operation on Friday, Aug. 7, targeting Russia’s vulnerable civilian logistics network.
A Ukrainian drone struck a Wildberries warehouse in Yekaterinburg, over 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
The attack sparked a fire and forced the evacuation of approximately 800 employees, temporarily shutting down operations at the regional hub and prompting brief flight restrictions at the nearby Koltsovo Airport.
The Yekaterinburg strike is part of a sustained, effective campaign against Wildberries, Russia’s largest e-commerce retailer.
Since mid-July, more than 20 of the company’s facilities have been targeted, knocking at least eight of its 15 largest logistics hubs offline.
