Black Forest Systems (BFS), an Estonian-Ukrainian defense tech company specializing in autonomous unmanned systems, robotic platforms, and high-performance electronics, has secured $400,000 in investment from two Swedish investment firms, the company announced on Thursday.
In a statement, BFS said that the investment from Front Ventures and Hede Capital Partners AB will “accelerate the development and industrialization of our infantry-first unmanned systems, designed based on the requests of Special Operation Forces and International Legion.”
“Our mission is to shift complexity from the operator to the technology itself,” said Oleksandr Davydenko, CEO of BFS, in the company’s statement.
The company builds vertically integrated platforms, he added, combining proprietary electronics, secure communications, and control software to ensure high performance in contested electronic warfare environments.
SHADOX
The company’s flagship product, SHADOX, is a compact reconnaissance complex designed for rapid deployment. According to the BFS website, its protected-propeller design is specifically built for operations inside buildings and trenches, allowing soldiers with minimal training to operate the drone effectively without the need for specialized external pilots.
BFS previously received support from Double Tap Investments Ltd, which enabled the creation of its core technology stack and the first SHADOX prototype.
The Swedish firms
Front Ventures is a Sweden-based defense-focused investment firm backing early-stage companies developing deployable, frontline-proven technologies for a European security environment, according to the company’s website.
The firm invests in software, unmanned systems, communications, electronic warfare, and critical defense supply chains, and has a strong operational presence in Ukraine. Front Ventures bridges proven Ukrainian innovation with Nordic industrial capacity to scale NATO-aligned solutions.
Hede Capital Partners AB, meanwhile, is a Swedish investment company registered in 2024, that focuses on investments in steel and innovative businesses.
