Slovak PM Fico Asserts No Peace Deal Without Ukraine’s Consent

Following a phone call with President Zelensky, Robert Fico confirmed Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s EU membership and emphasized that any peace agreement requires Kyiv’s approval.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated on Facebook, on Saturday, May 2, that no peace agreement with the Russian Federation is possible without the consent of the Ukrainian side.

The declaration followed a telephone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which both leaders expressed interest in fostering friendly bilateral relations despite holding differing views on certain issues.

Fico reaffirmed that Slovakia supports Ukraine’s ambitions to join the European Union, noting that Bratislava wishes to see a stable and democratic Ukraine and is ready to share its own accession experience.

The prime minister also announced plans to meet Zelensky personally at the upcoming European Political Community (EPC) summit in Yerevan on May 4. Additionally, diplomatic teams are working to schedule mutual visits between Kyiv and Bratislava to continue intergovernmental cooperation.

This diplomatic engagement follows a period of tension regarding energy supplies. In March 2026, the Slovak government backed a proposal to terminate emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine in response to a dispute over oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline.

While Fico has previously criticized Western military aid and halted state-funded military assistance to Kyiv, his administration has allowed commercial arms sales to continue and has maintained a less hostile diplomatic stance toward Ukraine than neighboring Hungary.
