Ukraine’s air defense networks repelled a massive, multi-vector aerial assault Saturday night into Sunday morning, May 17, intercepting or electronically suppressing 279 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) out of 287 deployed by Russian forces.
The nationwide air raid alerts began around 7:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, with tracking systems identifying high-volume drone swarms launched from six primary bases inside the Russian Federation: Orel, Kursk, Bryansk, Millerovo, Shatalovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk.
According to an official statement from the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia utilized “Shahed” UAVs, as well as “Gerbera,” “Italmas,” and “Parodiya” simulator drones carrying cheap components to mimic major tactical signatures on Ukrainian radar screens.
The defensive operation was handled by a combined force of tactical aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare (EW) units.
By 8:00 a.m. Sunday, defenders had successfully neutralized 279 targets across the northern, southern, and eastern sectors of the theate. However, military command confirmed that eight strike UAVs managed to breach defense nets, recording direct hits across seven separate locations, with falling debris recorded at an additional seven sites.
Heavy destructive toll in Dnipro
The Dnipropetrovsk region was a primary focal point of the overnight assault. While localized air defense teams successfully downed 56 incoming drones over the province, several unintercepted munitions caused heavy damage within the regional capital.
Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Head Oleksandr Hanzha reported that a kamikaze drone directly impacted a residential neighborhood in the city of Dnipro, sparking a fast-moving structural fire that completely engulfed a single-family home. First responders extracted a 70-year-old female resident from the burning wreckage; she was rushed to a local intensive care unit and remains in critical condition.
Two other men, aged 50 and 60, sustained blast-induced trauma and shrapnel wounds but were released for outpatient recovery after receiving emergency medical treatment.
Later Hanzha added, that in the Kryvyi Rih district, the communities of Kryvyi Rih, Lozuvatka, and Zelenodolsk came under attack. A private home and infrastructure were damaged there, and four people were injured.
In the Nikopol district, the Russians struck Nikopol, as well as the Marganetsk, Chervonohryhorivsk, Myrivsk, and Pokrovsk communities, damaging a business, infrastructure, and both high-rise and private homes.
In the Synelnykivskyi district, the enemy attacked the Pokrovska, Petropavlivska, and Mezhivska communities. There, a business, a private home, and a garage were damaged. A 58-year-old man was injured.
A multi-city strategic bombardment campaign
The overnight drone wave expanded upon a highly volatile 48 hours for the province, with Russian forces launching over 30 separate tactical strikes using a combination of heavy tube artillery and UAVs across four administrative districts.
On Saturday, Russian units pounded the Kryvyi Rih district and Kherson, killing one person and injuring two.
