President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian drones hit an oil refinery in Russia’s Yaroslavl region overnight between Thursday and Friday.
The attack likely targeted the Slavneft-YANOS refinery, Russia’s sixth-largest refinery with an annual capacity of around 15 million tons of oil, following another attack on the site on Tuesday.
Zelensky confirmed the attack after a briefing from Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky on Friday.
“Tonight, Ukraine’s Defense Forces operated in the direction of an oil refinery in Yaroslavl, this is about 700 kilometers [435 miles] from our territory,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
The Yaroslavl region lies roughly 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Moscow and hosts infrastructure connected to Russia’s domestic fuel network.
Earlier on Friday, Yaroslavl regional governor Mikhail Yevrayev said the region had come under a Ukrainian drone attack.
“Our region was subjected to an attack by Ukrainian [unmanned aerial vehicles] UAVs,” Yevrayev said.
He added that traffic was temporarily closed on the highway exit from Yaroslavl toward Moscow “for safety reasons,” while emergency services worked at the scene.
No casualties were reported.
Following this, the Russian Telegram channel Shot reported that local residents heard around 20 explosions in the area and said a drone strike caused a fire at an industrial facility.
Russia’s defense ministry claimed to have downed 217 Ukrainian drones overnight across 18 regions and cities.
Analysts from the independent Russian outlet Astra said the Slavneft-YANOS refinery was likely targeted again based on available footage.
The overnight attack follows an earlier strike on Yaroslavl, during which local officials said an industrial facility was hit. Analysts also suggested it was the Slavneft-YANOS refinery.
The facility was also struck on April 26.
Zelensky added that Ukraine is preparing what he called “long-range sanctions,” referring to deep strikes on Russian facilities, in response to attacks on its cities and communities.
Zelensky previously vowed to retaliate following Russia’s record May 14 airstrike on Kyiv that toppled a residential building and killed 24, including 3 children.
“We are bringing the war home to Russia, and this is entirely fair,” Zelensky wrote on Friday.
As of Wednesday, Ukraine’s General Staff said it struck 10 Russian oil refineries in May and forced six to shut down.
