Russian forces launched a combined attack using ballistic missiles and drones against the city of Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region early morning Sunday, Aug. 16, hitting industrial facilities and causing casualties.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that the strikes on Kryvyi Rih killed two people and injured 13 others. Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Head Oleksandr Hanzha stated that a 48-year-old man was hospitalized in severe condition, while 10 others were admitted in moderate condition.
Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Kryvyi Rih Defense Council, confirmed the city was targeted by both ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The strikes damaged two industrial enterprises and ignited fires, prompting ongoing emergency rescue operations.
The State Emergency Service also reported fires breaking out in the Shyroke and Hrushivka communities.
In a separate attack within the Dnipropetrovsk region, a 55-year-old man was injured in the Nikopol district. The strikes damaged local infrastructure, an enterprise, and residential buildings, causing multiple fires.
Ballistic missile attack on Kyiv
Concurrently on the night of Aug. 15, Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with ballistic missiles, resulting in explosions across the city.
The State Emergency Service reported that the attack caused fires and structural damage in the Obolonskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, injuring two people.
In the Obolonskyi district, a large fire broke out on the territory of a local market. Debris also fell near non-residential premises, igniting several parked vehicles. Another location sustained minor structural damage without a fire, while a non-residential building was hit directly.
In the Holosiivskyi district, rescue workers contained a fire that started in a non-residential development zone following the strikes.
Subsequently, the State Emergency Service reported that three people had been injured as a result of the Russian strike on Kyiv.
Previous strikes on Saturday
The overnight assaults follow a series of attacks on the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions the previous day during Saturday Aug. 15.
Russian forces struck the city of Pavlohrad, causing a fire, damaging residential buildings, and injuring two men.
The same day, a drone attack targeted a combine harvester in the Zaporizhzhia district, injuring two agricultural workers.
Early Saturday morning, Russian forces also struck a multi-story residential building in Marhanets, Dnipropetrovsk region, killing a three-month-old boy and injuring 11 others.
Concurrently, drone strikes in the city of Zaporizhzhia damaged an industrial enterprise and a shopping center.
