A Russian drone struck a civilian vehicle in the northeastern city of Sumy late Saturday, Aug. 15, killing a 59-year-old man and injuring his wife.
Sumy Regional Military Administration Head Oleh Hryhorov reported the attack on Telegram, stating the drone targeted the car, causing it to catch fire.
The deceased victim’s wife was hospitalized with injuries and is receiving medical care.
Hryhorov noted that Russian forces repeatedly attacked Sumy with drones throughout the evening and night. While Ukrainian air defenses intercepted some of the targets, he emphasized that the overall intensity of the attacks remained high.
Strikes on Kryvyi Rih and Kyiv
The attack on Sumy occurred alongside a broader wave of Russian strikes early Sunday morning, Aug. 16.
Russian forces launched a combined attack using ballistic missiles and drones against Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The strikes killed one person and injured 13 others. A 48-year-old man was hospitalized in severe condition, while 10 others were admitted in moderate condition.
The strikes damaged two industrial enterprises and ignited fires. Separate attacks in the Nikopol district injured a 55-year-old man and damaged local infrastructure and residential buildings.
Concurrently, Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with ballistic missiles. The State Emergency Service reported that the strikes caused fires and structural damage in the Obolonskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, injuring three people.
In the Obolonskyi district, a large fire broke out at a local market, and falling debris ignited several parked vehicles. In the Holosiivskyi district, rescue workers contained a fire that started in a non-residential development zone following the strikes.
