Run for Azovstal: Kyiv’s ‘Spartan Race’ Channels the Heroism of ‘Operation Sky’

The “Spartan Kyiv 2025” a charity obstacle race held in Kyiv inspired by the daring “Sky” operation, when Ukrainian pilots broke through to the encircled defenders of Azovstal.

A large-scale charity obstacle race, “Spartan Kyiv 2025,” that will take place in Ukraine’s capital this May commemorate a unique air mission — the high-risk effort to support and evacuate encircled Ukrainian defenders of Mariupol in 2022.

Operation “Sky” is considered one of the most audacious air missions of the modern era. Ukrainian pilots flew deep into Russian-occupied Mariupol under heavy enemy fire to deliver weapons, medicine, and critical support to the defenders of the Azovstal steel plant. Sixteen helicopters, seven flights, and dozens of lives saved — all bordering on the impossible.

“Army aviation helicopters were flying into the heart of occupied Mariupol, more than 120 kilometers (75 miles) behind enemy lines. The operation demonstrated Ukraine’s readiness to fight to the last — and showed those defending the city that they were not forgotten,” Yevhenii Yerin, a representative of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (HUR) said, during a May 8 event.

“This operation involved every possible resource — intelligence, special forces, satellite data, logistics. It was a joint effort between HUR and army aviation. A mission unlike anything the world has seen before,” Yerin added.

The Spartan event is dedicated to the anniversary of Operation “Sky” that will also include a charity auction, with a combat knife signed by the head of HUR, Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, as the top prize.

“Everyone who joins this race runs not just for sport — but in memory of those who held the line until the very end,” Diana Podolianchuk, co-organizer of the event said.

“The race aims to support all those soldiers and their families and say that we are running in their honor and memory. They are looking at us, and we have to fight and believe that victory will be ours.”

Every finisher of the Spartan race will receive a commemorative medal and an exclusive race T-shirt. But beyond the medals, the true reward is remembering the events in Mariupol three years ago. The event includes a variety of distances for all fitness levels: from kids’ and charity races to team runs, trail formats, and special categories for veterans and athletes who have lost limbs.

Race formats include:

  • SUPER (10 km, 25 obstacles)
  • SPRINT (5 km, 20 obstacles)
  • CHARITY SPRINT
  • PARA RACE for athletes with disabilities
  • TRAIL TEAM RACE, (run without obstacles)
  • KIDS RACE
  • ONLINE RACE for those joining remotely

The organizers say this is more than just a sporting event — it’s a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and the ongoing fight for Ukraine’s freedom. According to race organizer Oleksii Vovk, 100% of partner donations and 10% of registration fees will go directly to support Ukraine’s military intelligence agencies.

In 2024, the Spartan community raised an impressive Hr. 5.7 million ($137,000), which was used to purchase 200 FPV drones and support development of the MAGURA V5 sea drone — a technology that later proved its effectiveness on the battlefield.

“This year, we aim to do even more — and we invite you to be a part of this mission,” the organizers said.

Spartan Kyiv 2025 will take place on May 17–18 in Kyiv — a place where sport, remembrance, and support for Ukraine’s defenders come together.
