Russia Unleashes 104 Drones on Ukraine - Dozens Hit Despite Air Defenses

Russia unleashed 104 drones overnight, striking Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions. There were injured, homes destroyed, and fires broke out despite most drones being shot down.

On Thursday evening, Russian forces launched a massive drone assault on Ukraine that continued overnight into the morning after sunrise, Friday Aug. 8, targeting multiple regions and leaving several civilians injured, according to Ukrainian officials.

In the Buchansky district of the Kyiv region, three women aged 16, 56, and 80 were injured in an early-morning strike, regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk said on Telegram.

Their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. The attack also sparked fires and damaged private homes.

The assault began late on Aug. 7, when Russian forces launched several groups of strike drones toward the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions.

Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk reported that a kindergarten and several private houses were damaged in the city as a result of Russian bombardment.

“Seven private houses and a kindergarten were damaged. The main thing is that everyone is alive,” he wrote.

Speaking during a national telethon, Fedoruk added that more than 10 Russian Shahed drones had been directed at the community.

In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that a Russian Lightning drone hit a gas station in the Kyiv district, injuring a woman. A second drone strike damaged nearby homes, and later, a Shahed drone attack ignited a fire at a civilian enterprise in the Saltivsky district.

According to the State Emergency Service (DSNS), rescuers extinguished the fire caused by a Russian UAV strike. In the Saltivskyi district of Kharkiv, a strike on a civilian enterprise ignited a fire in a four-story office building, setting the roof structures and technical floor ablaze.

“Two civilians were injured – a man born in 1959 and a woman born in 1962 – who suffered an acute stress reaction. Fifty rescuers, a pyrotechnic team from the State Emergency Service, and 13 pieces of equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire,” the report stated.

In Shostka, Sumy region, Iranian-made Shahed drones struck early in the morning, damaging several apartment buildings, cars, and social infrastructure. One man, 54, was injured but treated on the spot.

The Odesa region also came under attack by Russian drones, the head of the regional military administration, Oleh Kiper, reported. A sewage pumping station building was damaged in the strike.

In the suburbs, dry grass caught fire due to falling debris from downed drones; the blaze was quickly extinguished.

“A gas station guard was injured when the blast wave shattered the glass. The man sustained multiple cuts to his hand. Doctors provided all necessary assistance, and he is continuing outpatient treatment,” Kiper added.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia attacked from 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 until the morning of Aug. 8 with 104 Shahed-type and other drones, including eight high-speed jet UAVs.

Air defenses shot down or suppressed 82 of them, but 26 drones hit targets in 10 locations, and debris from downed drones caused additional damage in eight areas.

Emergency services continue to work at all strike sites, assessing damage and providing assistance.
