Russia Strikes Odesa Ports and Zelensky’s Hometown Kryvyi Rih, Killing 1

Russian attacks hit two ports in Odesa and heavily shell Kryvyi Rih, leaving at least one dead and multiple injured, officials report.

Russian forces struck two ports in the Odesa region and heavily shelled President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih on Wednesday, Jan. 7 officials said.

Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba wrote on Telegram that one person was killed in the attack on the ports in Odesa.

“We express our condolences to the family and loved ones. At least five people were injured - they are receiving all necessary medical care,” he said.

According to Kuleba, the attack damaged port facilities, administrative buildings, and oil containers. He reported that emergency services were working at the sites.

Efforts to eliminate the consequences of the strike are ongoing, and the ports continue to operate.

“This is another strike by a terrorist country on port infrastructure, which is involved in ensuring the world’s food security. Russia is deliberately trying to undermine the economy and destroy maritime logistics,” he added.

Meanwhile, the head of the local military administration of Kryvyi Rih, Oleksandr Vilkul, also reported a massive attack on that city.

“Currently, three wounded. Already taken to the hospital. Moderately serious,” he wrote, without providing further details.

Russia struck Kryvyi Rih with ballistic missiles, hitting infrastructure, and targeted energy facilities in several regions, causing power outages.

Russia carried out another overnight attack on Ukraine on Jan. 6-7, firing an Iskander-M ballistic missile and launching 95 drones, most of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses.

Russia launched the drones, mainly Shahed-type, from multiple directions, including Russia, occupied Crimea, and eastern Ukraine. Ukraine responded with fighter jets, air defense systems, electronic warfare, and drones.

By 7:30 a.m., 81 drones had been shot down or disabled, while 14 struck targets at eight locations. Drone wreckage fell in five other areas.

In Dnipro, drones hit residential areas, injuring seven people, including two children. Mayor Borys Filatov reported damage to schools, high-rise apartments, and heating systems.
