Russian Absurdity, Belligerence and Smugness – Putin’ You in the Picture

This occasional series is intended to highlight the comments of Russian leadership, assorted politicians, generals and various others to expose Moscow’s perverse view of the world.

Moscow’s perverse view of the world is frequently demonstrated in the comments its leadership, assorted politicians, generals and various other commentators make – particularly in relation to Ukraine, its allies and the “special military operation.”

In this occasional series Kyiv Post will publish some of those statements to show you the truth of that assertion – so that you don’t have to.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin: “Despite sanctions, Russia is maintaining its leading positions in the global market for energy resources… primarily in the direction of friendly countries.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: “The majority of countries around the world view the coordination of efforts between Moscow and Beijing on the international stage as the most significant stabilizing factor during these challenging times in global politics.”

Maria Butina, Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs: “About 1,000 people… teachers, IT and medical specialists … mainly from France, Germany, the US, Australia and Italy… have moved to Russia… and numbers continue to increase.”

Kirill Logvinov, Director of Russia’s International Organizations Department: In reference to EU proposals to lift sanctions against Syria: “Brussels links reducing sanctions against Damascus with its refusal to cooperate with us. This rather simplistic approach… shows that EU members will continue making attempts to isolate Russia in the international arena… but it is Brussels that will end up on the periphery of current global processes.”

Now for some quotes by Russia’s arch-proponents of the absurd

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russia’s Security Council: The former Russian president and prime minister never fails to bring absurdity to ever more extreme levels with or without copious quantities of vodka – his main source of motivation according to popular opinion:

Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claim that Ukrainian troops in Russia’s Kursk region had been encircled – “The Supreme Commander-in-Chief said: ‘In the event of the laying down of arms, Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region will be guaranteed life and decent treatment.’”

“This is a very humane approach of our country, but its flipside for Ukrainian Nazis means that if they refuse to lay down their arms, they will all be consistently and mercilessly destroyed. The bloody regime of Kyiv scum still has a chance to save its people. The next few hours will show what they have chosen.”

In relation to Europe’s position towards Moscow: “Russophobia stems from the European bipolar exaggeration of its view of Russia… [which should be treated with] Kalibr, Onyx, Iskander, Oreshnik… and in severe cases, Yars and Sarmat [nuclear weapons].” He rounded off his comments saying “the ‘European condition’ is more commonly observed in women such as Ursula von der Leyen [head of the European Commission], Kaja Kallas [chief of the European diplomacy]) or in hermaphrodites suffering from drug addiction: [Vladimir] Zelensky and [Mikheil] Saakashvili.”

In commenting on the new future German chancellor: “The future Chancellor Merz declared an aggressive war waged daily by Russia in Europe, in the form of arson, contract killings, vandalism and disinformation. He hasn’t worked a day yet and is already lying like Goebbels. Yes, that is exactly the kind of war your Nazi country waged against ours in 1941-1945. We know how it ended victoriously. You’re starting off badly, Fritz! And I hope you will end up the same way...”

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova: Never fails to score less than 100 on the scale of irrationality. Here are examples of what we mean:

She said on Tuesday: “The guilty verdict against Marine Le Pen Head of France’s National Unification Party is a sign of the deep crisis in which the West finds itself and the death throes of its liberal democracy.”

Referring to Britain’s intention to introduce an “enhanced” control regime against Russians under its Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS): “These new rules are truly insane. The intellectual inferiority that has struck the ruling class of Foggy Albion has reached its apogee… The soldiers and veterans of World War II who fought against Nazism, are now scurrying in the dirt, hysterically looking for connections with Russia.”

Last but not least

Dmitry Peskov the Kremlin’s spokesperson: The examples of Peskov’s oddball take on reality in the quarter of a century since he became Putin’s mouthpiece are legion, so here are a couple of recent examples from a recent press conference:

In response to reports that Trump was pi**ed off at and angry with Putin: “There is a lack of supporting quotes in media reports that Trump allegedly got angry at our president because of his words about Vladimir Zelensky. Some of the mentioned statements were given in a retelling, these were not quotes in quotation marks.”

Commenting on the New York Times (NYT) report about the involvement of the US in the war in Ukraine: “If you recall all of the statements of Russian President Vladimir Putin – starting in 2014 – about the role of the United States and Great Britain in organizing the coup in Ukraine, about their actions in terms of the militarization of Ukraine, then a lot comes to light here that proves these actions, of course.”

“Nevertheless, Russia continues to work with the US to rebuild bilateral relations which suffered enormous damage under the previous [US] administration.”

On the sentencing of Marie Le Pen: “The Kremlin considers this to be an internal matter for France but can state that more and more European capitals are following the path of trampling on democratic norms.”
