Russian forces have repeatedly bombed civilian areas inside Russia’s own Belgorod region, according to a newly released call intercept by Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) that captures a local resident describing fires, explosions and casualties caused not by Ukraine, but by Russian bombs and drone activity.
In the intercepted call, a woman from the Graivoron area near the Ukrainian border tells a man identified as “Seryozha” about a series of fires and destruction that erupted “yesterday.” She reports at least 12 people wounded, multiple vehicles destroyed and several drones striking a parking area.
“Seryozha, yesterday alone 12 people were wounded in Graivoron,” she says.
“They burned two minibuses [marshrutkas, or ‘route taxi’ commercial buses]. Eight cars burned – a whole parking lot. Four drones flew onto the parking lot… the cars burned, a fire started. They hit the minibuses – 14 to 18 people were wounded.”
Her account details multiple fires on civilian infrastructure, drone strikes on parked cars and a chaotic emergency response scene. But the most striking part of the call is her claim that Russia’s own air force is responsible for a series of deadly explosions on their side of the border.
The woman tells the man she surmises that Russian aircraft have repeatedly lost control of their own guided bombs, which have then fallen on civilian areas inside Russia.
“For 11 days, Russian bombers dropped 8 bombs – 8 bombs – on the territory of Belgorod region,” she says.
“Can you imagine? It’s f***ing insane.”
According to HUR, Russia continues to attack Ukrainian cities with aerial bombs fitted with glide and guidance modules. However, due to technical instability, poor manufacturing and pilot procedural or navigation errors, a significant portion of these bombs veer off course or unintentionally target the wrong object – often impacting Russian towns near the border.
Belgorod region lies directly under the flight paths of many Russian airstrikes targeting eastern Ukraine, making it especially vulnerable to such incidents.
Russian authorities regularly accuse Ukraine of bombing the region, but social media footage and repeated HUR intercepts increasingly indicate that Russia’s own military activity – including errant bombs and “friendly fire” – are responsible for a large share of the destruction.
In its statement, HUR promised:
“For every war crime committed against the Ukrainian people, there will be just retribution.”
Recent intercepted calls also revealed worsening conditions in the Russian military. One soldier complained of a lack of basic supplies, which led to troops dying on supply runs, while another admitted that various personnel – including cooks – were being used as infantry during frontal assaults.
Earlier last year, Kyiv Post also interviewed “Maria,” a professional eavesdropper with HUR, who said the “insane” things heard in intercepted calls are, in fact, real despite their often outrageous nature.
“They all are real even though they might seem insane. Sometimes I can’t believe the words I’m hearing myself, but we have what we have,” she said.
