Residents of Russia’s border regions continue to believe Kremlin-manufactured myths and justify attacks on Ukrainian cities with fabricated claims of “biolabs” and geopolitical fantasies, according to a new intercepted call released by Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR).

In the conversation between two women from Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders northern Ukraine, one of them insists that “everything was fine” in Mykolaiv and that “only the outskirts were bombed” — allegedly because “some laboratories had been built there.” She concludes: “Once those labs were smashed, it all ended.”

This narrative reflects a long-standing Russian propaganda line, dating back to 2022, which spreads disinformation about supposed “American biological laboratories” in Ukraine to justify strikes on civilian infrastructure.

The woman then urges her friend to flee toward the border: “Put your backpack on and walk — Volodya will meet you at the border.” At the same time, she openly expresses support for Russian aggression, saying: “Frankly speaking, they need to take Odesa… they shouldn’t be allowed to have access to the sea.”

HUR concludes its communique with the customary: “Every war crime committed against the Ukrainian people will be met with just retribution.”
