A series of overnight attacks on civilian targets across Europe has sparked investigations into a shadowy new group suspected of acting as a front for Iranian intelligence, Financial Times reported on Sunday, April 5.
In North London, three individuals were captured on CCTV setting fire to ambulances belonging to a Jewish medical service. Similar incidents involving arson and attempted bombings have been recorded in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France over the past month.
Researchers have identified a previously unknown group, Ashab al-Yamin, which emerged in early March and claimed responsibility for an arson attack on a synagogue in Liège, Belgium. Analysts describe the group’s sudden appearance as “atypical,” suggesting it may be a product of Iranian “hybrid warfare” designed to sow chaos while maintaining official deniability.
The escalation in Europe coincides with a major intensification of the conflict in the Middle East. Following the US-Israeli campaign that began on Feb. 28, Iran has launched repeated drone and missile strikes against critical infrastructure in the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Tehran has recently targeted desalination plants and energy facilities in the Gulf, accusing its neighbors of hosting US forces.
In Paris, French authorities recently thwarted an attempted attack near a Bank of America office, which investigators also link to this emerging network. Suspects detained across Europe are reportedly aged between 14 and 23. According to French media, some youths admitted to being recruited via social media platforms like Telegram and TikTok for payments as low as €500 to €1,000.
“The essence of hybrid warfare is to sow chaos and destabilize society,” experts noted, highlighting that the primary goal is to create an atmosphere of fear among Jewish communities and the financial sector.
While Tehran officially denies any involvement in the European attacks, the pattern of targeting US and Israeli interests mirrors its military operations in the Gulf.
As the regional quagmire deepens, Israeli forces are reportedly preparing for retaliatory strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, pending approval from Washington, further heightening global security concerns.
