Zelensky Hails 1,000-Kilometer Deep Strikes as Ukraine’s ‘Long-Range Sanctions’

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday, May 16, that Ukrainian long-range drone and intelligence operations have systematically struck critical military and energy targets up to 1,000 kilometers deep inside Russian territory. Describing the operations as “long-range sanctions,” Zelensky and military commanders confirmed the destruction or severe damage of high-value hardware, including a Be-200 amphibious aircraft, a Ka-27 naval helicopter, a Pantsir-S1 air defense system, and an ammunition cargo ship.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has lauded a highly coordinated, week-long campaign of asymmetric deep strikes against Russia’s domestic military and energy infrastructure, revealing that operations are penetrating nearly 1,000 kilometers behind the front lines.

In a video statement published to his Telegram channel on Saturday, May 16, Zelensky referred to the attacks as Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions” on the Kremlin’s war machine. “This is a completely fair response to what the Russians are doing,” Zelensky wrote, promising that both the distance and frequency of these long-range strikes will continue to expand.

A multi-theater path of destruction

The statement follows a massive, unified offensive executed overnight on Friday by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the Security Service (SBU), the Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR), and the newly formed Unmanned Systems Forces (USF).

According to USF Commander Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, drone operators executed 55 confirmed strikes hitting 23 high-value strategic targets across mainland Russia and occupied territories.

The confirmed tally of targeted hardware includes a rare Be-200 Altair amphibious aircraft and a Ka-27 naval anti-submarine helicopter, both struck at a coastal staging ground in Morskoy near Yeysk, a Tor-M2 surface-to-air missile system in the occupied Luhansk region and a Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft system in Crimea. Brovdi noted these represented the 16th and 17th Russian air defense units eliminated in the first half of May alone.

A commercial cargo ship loaded with ammunition in the occupied port of Berdyansk has also been struck, alongside a vital Redut-2US military communications complex.

Striking the Kremlin’s energy refueling hubs

A core focus of the deep-strike campaign was the degradation of Russia’s fuel refining capacity. Zelensky highlighted the successful interception of energy facilities nearly 1,000 km from Ukrainian border positions.

Joint HUR and Special Operations forces successfully bypassed regional electronic warfare nets to strike the Ryazan Oil Refinery, located 460 km from the border. Operated by Rosneft, the mega-plant processes 17.1 million tons of crude oil annually, serving as a primary provider of military-grade gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel for Russian occupation forces.

Local OSINT analysis confirmed that despite claims of drone shootdowns by Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov, multiple drone impacts ignited an immense industrial fire at the processing units, causing “black rain” to fall over neighboring residential sectors.

Simultaneously, the General Staff confirmed successful long-range drone strikes hitting Russian warships – including a missile ship and a minesweeper – docked at the highly insulated Caspian Sea naval base in Kaspiysk, proving that Russia’s safe havens are rapidly shrinking.

“I thank the soldiers of the AFU, SBU, and intelligence services for their accuracy,” Zelensky added, signaling that Ukraine’s manufacturing capabilities for long-range strike drones have achieved the scale necessary to consistently disrupt Russia’s supply lines from within.
