A Russian missile strike on the village of Pechenyhy in the Kharkiv region killed 10 people and injured 18 on Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to local authorities.
Kharkiv Regional Military Administration (OVA) Head Oleh Syniehubov said the injured were receiving medical treatment.
Emergency crews were working at the scene to clear the consequences of the attack.
Later, Syniehubov clarified that the number of people injured in the attack had risen from 8 to 18.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has also reacted to the strike, writing on social media:
“This morning, the Russians brutally struck a crowded intersection in Pechenyhy, Kharkiv region, where the post office and shops are located, surrounded by residential buildings.”
He expressed his condolences to the families and friends of those killed. According to Zelensky, rescuers have already extinguished the fire, while emergency and other services continue to work at the scene. The circumstances of the attack are being investigated.
“We will definitely respond to this Russian strike. And it is no less important that partners also complement our fair kinetic responses with their steps in putting pressure on Russia and supporting Ukraine,” the president added.
Later, the OVA head published photos showing the aftermath of the strike.
“The occupiers struck the central part of the settlement with two Banderol missiles,” the report said.
Syniehubov specified that the strike set a cafe and seven cars on fire across an area of about 400 square meters (4,305 square feet). The fire has since been extinguished. Ten private houses, a post office building, five shops, and 15 cars were also damaged.
“Medics are providing the wounded with the necessary assistance. The rubble from the damaged buildings is being cleared, while emergency services are patrolling the surrounding area in case anyone else needs help,” the report added.
Russian drones hit Kyiv region and Zaporizhzhia
Russian drones also attacked Kyiv region early Tuesday, damaging civilian infrastructure in the Brovary district.
As of 7:30 a.m., an office building, warehouses, and a private house had been damaged, according to local authorities. No casualties had been reported at that time.
Fires broke out at three locations in the Brovary community. Authorities said they would provide further details about the damage and consequences of the attack later.
It was later reported that the distribution center of the EVA retail chain and the EVA.UA online store were hit in the attack.
The company said the exact extent of the damage and losses would be assessed after the fire is extinguished and the facility is inspected.
“Preliminarily, the fire may have damaged both the EVA.UA online store warehouse and facilities supplying goods to the chain’s offline stores,” the company said.
As a result, some stores may temporarily experience shortages of certain goods, while some online orders may be delayed.
In Zaporizhzhia, two people were killed in a Russian drone strike late on Monday, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS).
The victims were a 43-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman. The attack partially destroyed a residential building and caused a fire, which rescuers extinguished.
Russia launches 147 drones overnight
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched 147 Shahed-type attack drones, including jet-powered variants, as well as Gerbera and Parody decoy drones, beginning at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17.
Ukraine’s Air Force said the attack was countered by fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile fire groups.
As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 111 Russian drones across northern, southern, and eastern Ukraine.
Russian drones were recorded being hit at 19 locations, while debris from downed drones fell at three other locations.
