Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 182 drones, three aviation missiles, and six loitering munitions out of a major barrage launched by Russian forces early Saturday morning, Aug. 22, the Ukrainian Air Force reported.
From 6:00 p.m. local time on Aug. 21, Russian forces launched Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles, three Kh-31P/Kh-59 aviation missiles, “Banderol” loitering munitions, and 217 uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). The drone swarm included Shahed-type UAVs, with over 50 being jet-powered, as well as “Gerbera” and “Parodiya” decoy drones.
The attacks originated from multiple locations, including Russia’s Kursk, Bryansk, Belgorod, Orel, and Rostov regions, as well as the Black Sea, occupied Donetsk, and occupied Crimea. The primary targets were the Kyiv and Odesa regions.
As of 9:00 a.m. on Aug. 22, Ukrainian aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups downed or suppressed the three aviation missiles, six “Banderols,” and 182 drones.
The Air Force recorded direct hits at 41 locations and debris falls at 12 locations, noting that several drones remained active in Ukrainian airspace.
Strikes on railway infrastructure and Independence Day warnings
The drone barrage coincided with ballistic missile strikes on a railway enterprise in Kyiv’s Darnytsia district early Saturday morning, which killed a foreman for the state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia.
The strike occurred almost simultaneously with the ballistic threat warning and that the remaining staff were evacuated immediately. A warehouse in the district caught fire following the strikes.
Russian forces also targeted the Odesa railway network, damaging the Rozdilna station building, though Ukrzaliznytsia confirmed that overall railway operations and train schedules remained unaffected.
The attacks occur just days before Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day on Aug. 24. The Security Service of Ukraine had previously urged citizens to remain vigilant regarding potential Russian strikes and provocations surrounding the anniversary.
The Saturday strikes also follow a devastating attack on Kyiv on Aug. 20, which resulted in 16 fatalities and 42 injuries and prompted a citywide day of mourning.
