Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) released a recently intercepted phone call in which a Russian woman describes the grim fate of a relative serving on the front line, once more underscoring Moscow’s reliance on brutal “meat assaults” and show complete disregard for its own wounded troops.
In the recording, a woman identified only as a relative of a Russian soldier called Dimka recounts how he was a member of an assault unit, was seriously wounded and given minimal treatment so he could be sent back to the front quickly.
“Dimka is in the hospital. He called yesterday,” the woman says in Russian. “He’s got three holes in his leg and a piece of shrapnel in his neck. They didn’t take it out. He told me, if they remove it, he’ll have to recover for a long time. But they don’t want that – they want it to close up faster so they can send him back.”
The call also sheds light on the staggering losses within his unit. “Out of 25, only two are still alive,” she says.
Commanders frequently push wounded men back into battle, reflecting how the Kremlin prioritizes the maximum manpower numbers over their survival.
The term “meat assaults” has been used by Ukrainian officials and military analysts to describe Russia’s repeated waves of poorly trained infantry sent against heavily fortified positions, often with catastrophic losses. The strategy, that recalls Soviet World War II tactics, has drawn widespread criticism for its complete disregard of human lives.
For Ukrainian forces, such intercepts serve both as evidence of the human cost of Russia’s war and as a tool to reinforce morale. “Every war crime committed against the Ukrainian people will meet fair retribution,” HUR said in a statement accompanying the recording.
Ukrainian intelligence agencies have repeatedly intercepted calls that highlight extreme psychological stress, infighting, and Russia’s indifference to the welfare of its troops and citizens.
Earlier last year, Kyiv Post interviewed “Maria” who works as one of HUR’s professional eavesdroppers and spoke about the shocking things she hears.
Russia regularly dismisses the content of intercepted calls published by Ukraine, saying they are fake, a claim Kyiv Post put to Maria. She said: “They are all are real even though they might seem insane. Sometimes I can’t believe the words I’m hearing myself, but we have what we have.”
