Russia Pounds Dnipro, Odesa Overnight: 20 Injured, Children Among Victims

On Sunday, Russia, launched a combined drone and missile attack on Dnipro, striking residential areas, sparking fires, and injuring at least 18 people, including children. Additional drone strikes in Odesa damaged homes and injured two civilians. Authorities say emergency services are responding, victims are receiving treatment, and rescue and recovery operations are ongoing as further updates are expected.

On Sunday, Russia carried out a combined overnight attack on the city of Dnipro, striking a residential area, sparking multiple fires, and causing casualties.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces began launching drones toward Dnipro at approximately 8 p.m.

On Monday, May 18, at 2:32 a.m., Ukraine was under threat of ballistic missile strikes. Shortly afterward, missiles were detected heading toward Dnipro, including both ballistic and cruise missiles.

By 3:50 a.m., Russian forces continued periodic attacks on the city, with explosions reported in Dnipro.

Following the initial wave of drone strikes, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration (OVA), Oleksandr Ganzha, reported fires in the city.

The roof of a high-rise residential building and a warehouse storing pyrotechnic products were set ablaze. At that stage, no casualties had been reported.

However, after subsequent strikes, Ganzha confirmed that a residential area had been hit. The attack triggered several fires, and reports indicated that people were trapped inside one of the damaged buildings.

As of 7:10 a.m., authorities confirmed that 18 people had been injured in Dnipro, including a two-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, both of whom are receiving outpatient treatment.

“Eight people have been hospitalized. These are four women and four men. Doctors assess their condition as stable,” Ganzha said.

The head of the Odesa OVA, Oleh Kiper, reported that Russian forces also carried out a massive drone attack on Odesa overnight. Two people were injured.

“This is an 11-year-old boy and a 59-year-old man. They are being provided with all the necessary assistance,” he wrote on Telegram.

According to local authorities, Russian drones struck three residential buildings in Odesa’s Kyivskyi and Prymorskyi districts.

One of the buildings, a single-story house in the Prymorskyi district, was completely destroyed. Other buildings sustained damage to facades, roofs, and windows. Several fires broke out but were quickly extinguished.

Emergency and municipal services are currently working at the scene. Residents of the affected buildings are receiving assistance, and efforts are ongoing to eliminate the consequences of the attack.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces on Sunday launched a combined strike on Ukraine starting at 6 p.m., using strike drones and ground-based missiles.

“The main direction of the attack was the Dnipro and Dnipropetrovsk region. The Odesa, Chernihiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions were also targeted,” the report said.

In total, 546 aerial attack assets were detected, including 22 missiles and 524 drones:

  • 14 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles
  • 8 Iskander-K cruise missiles
  • 524 Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas-type strike drones and Parody-type decoy drones

The attack was repelled by Ukrainian aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare and unmanned systems forces, as well as mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces.

On Monday, as of 8:30 a.m., Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 507 targets, including 4 missiles and 503 drones:

  • 4 Iskander-K cruise missiles
  • 503 drones of various types

Authorities reported impacts of 18 missiles and 16 strike unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across 34 locations, with additional debris from downed drones recorded at 11 sites.
