TIME magazine has published a lengthy and detailed interview with President Volodymyr Zelensky focusing on him as a war leader in the face of Russia’s ongoing assault on Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24.
In the article, which was the result of Senior Correspondent Simon Shuster spending two weeks in the presidential compound, Zelensky said that he was in constant touch with the Ukrainian military and that photographs of dead civilians in Bucha still haunt him.
He also revealed that Russian troops came within minutes of finding him and his family in the first hours of the war. The Russians made two attempts to storm the presidential compound. His wife and children were still there at the time.
