Ukraine hopes for US assistance in granting Ukraine major non-NATO ally status

“Our state hopes for the U.S. help, in particular, through granting us a major non-NATO ally status,” Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Mykhailo Koval said.

The council’s decision comes into forces by the order of Ukrainian president.

Poroshenko said earlier that amid the current situation it could be reasonable to ask the U.S. congress to grant Ukraine a special status – as to Israel, Australia and Philippines, which are allies outside the NATO block – in order to resolve the security issue.

Readiness to provide further assistance to Ukraine exists in the Congress and Senate and the U.S. already provides such help, Klimkin said in an interview with Voice of America during his working trip to the U.S. And of course, the issue of granting a special ally status to Ukraine is being discussed now and Ukraine will have new unique opportunities in the framework of this status, he said.
