KYIV, Sept 18 – The first gold medal is now on the Ukrainian Olympic team’s account as a result of the world record-breaking performance of swimmer Yana Klochkova in the 400 meter individual medley swimming event on Saturday, official Olympics site olympics.com reported.

Klochkova clocked in at 4 minutes 33.59 seconds to beat the previous record of 4:34.79 set by Chen Yan of China in Shanghai in October 1997.

Japan’s Yasuko Tajimo received the silver medal with a time 4:35.96, while Romania’s Beatrice Caslaru won the bronze medal with a time of 4 minutes 37.18 seconds.

Two hundred thirty-nine Ukrainian athletes will participate in 27 of 39 sports in the 27th Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Interfax-Ukraine reported. The athletes are to take part in 184 of 300 sporting events during the course of the games.

In the 1996 Olympics, held in the U.S. city of Atlanta, Georgia, Ukraine was represented by 233 athletes in 24 sports where the team collectively garnered nine gold, two silver and twelve bronze medals.

In line with a Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers’ resolution, athletes who win gold medals in the summer or winter Olympic Games will be awarded $50 thousand, while silver and bronze medallists will get $30 thousand and $20 million, respectively, news wires reported.
