Ukrainian Christmas traditions tell a story shaped by centuries.
From the Ukrainian language school Language Lab, an online lecture titled “The Magic of Ukrainian Christmas” will take place on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Kyiv time, inviting audiences to explore these rich traditions.

“During the talk, we will explore the symbolism of the Christmas cycle of holidays in Ukrainian culture, delve into fascinating folk myths and legends, and examine traditional preparations and celebrations,” said the lecturer, philologist and cultural sociologist Kateryna Voloshyna.
Among other things, attendees will learn how Ukrainians historically sought to foresee the future, why Christmas is celebrated on two different dates, and how Soviet authorities tried to reshape these traditions. The origins of Ded Moroz will also be revealed, alongside guidance on decorating a Christmas tree in the Ukrainian style.
For those curious about authentic Ukrainian holiday symbols, the Language Lab lecture will clarify what a didukh, pavuk, and vertep are, and highlight the Ukrainian roots of the world-famous “Carol of the Bells,” including the tragic story of its composer, Mykola Leontovych.
