Businessman Kurchenko wants to lift sanctions against himself

The Supreme Court has decided to involve the Security Service of Ukraine in participation in the case regarding the application of personal sanctions to businessman Serhiy Kurchenko.

According to the press service of the Supreme Court, the corresponding decision was made at a court hearing on Monday, January 13, when considering the case on Kurchenko’s lawsuit against the fifth President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on invalidating and canceling part of the presidential decree of May 14, 2018 on the introduction of personal sanctions by the National Security and Defense Council. Kurchenko was included in the list of individuals subject to sanctions by appendix 1 to the decision of the National Security and Defense Council.

“By this decision, the Supreme Court granted the motion of the defendant’s representative, who asked to involve the Security Service of Ukraine as a third party, since the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine decided to impose sanctions on the proposal of the SBU,” it said.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2020.

As reported, Kurchenko is on the EU sanctions list along with ex-president Viktor Yanukovych, ex-prime minister Mykola Azarov, former interior minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko, ex-prosecutor general Viktor Pshonka and his son Artem and other ex-officials.

Since February 2014, Kurchenko has been outside Ukraine, where he is hiding from the investigation. He is put on wanted list.

On May 2, 2018, Kurchenko was included in the list of sanctions of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
