Turkey‘s foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Friday, Sep.23, that Ankara supports the abolition of “veto” right in the UN Security Council system.

During a press briefing at the Turkevi Center on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, the minister stressed that the majority of UN member states agree with the idea of reforming the world organization.

Recently, the U.S., the President of the European Council Charles Michel, and others have called for the reform of the Security Council (UNSC), with the latter openly urging that Russia to be suspended from it.

Cavusoglu said they have “seen the vision of ‘the world is bigger than five,’ which the Turkish president has promotedfor years.

“We believe that the (UN) General Assembly, the Security Council should be more inclusive. There are many formulas coming from different countries, and all countries should be well represented here,” he said.

In his opinion, decision-making by a “majority vote” can become a substitute for the right of “veto.” The main thing in this matter is to ensure maximum coverage and fairness, the minister said.

Turkey “wants the UN and UN Security Council to be more inclusive. It wants all countries to be represented here. Cavusoglu elaborated.Of course, criteria could be determined according to the population, size, and geographical distribution of each country.

Ankara’s top diplomat also mentioned partial mobilization in Russia.

Cavusoglu said this decision does not bring the war’s end in Ukraine any closer.

“We stand for dialogue and negotiations with the participation of the two countries presidents. Everyone in all areas feels the negative impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine,” he said.

Cavusoglu assured that Turkey would continue to make every effort to ensure a just and long-term peace between Moscow and Kyiv.
