A fire broke out Monday, May 21, at the Bila Tserkva Thermal Power Plant in Ukraine’s Kyiv region, killing two people, officials said.

The blaze began around 1 p.m. local time in an inactive cooling tower at the plant, according to the Bilotserkivska City Territorial Community.

Emergency crews responded quickly and contained the fire, which covered about 960 square meters (10,333 square feet), the State Emergency Service reported.

Firefighters later discovered two charred bodies during cleanup operations. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and the circumstances of the deaths.

The Bila Tserkva plant is a key energy facility in the region, supplying both electricity and centralized heating to homes, public institutions and industrial sites. It plays a crucial role in maintaining energy stability, particularly in colder months.
