At a defense enterprise in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) uncovered a so-called “mole” working for Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), who, according to the investigation, attempted to steal advanced military developments of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU).

The man, recruited by the Kremlin, was tasked with obtaining classified documents related to the production of components for Ukraine’s newest military vehicles. To fulfill this mission, he got a job at a local factory that fulfills defense contracts.

According to the SBU, the agency had been monitoring the suspect from the moment of his recruitment by the FSB.

“From his very first day at the enterprise, the mole tried to gain access to blueprints and technical schemes for the production of parts for wheeled military vehicles. He used his position as an engineer as cover and sought to quickly gain the trust of colleagues directly involved in the manufacturing process,” the SBU press service reported on Wednesday, May 21.

The SBU also stated that the man served as an artillery spotter: he traveled across the Odesa region, attempting to locate Ukrainian air defense positions and radar systems.

As a result of a preemptive operation, the SBU detained the 47-year-old local engineer, who was allegedly spying for the FSB. During searches, law enforcement found photos of technical documentation that the SBU says he intended to pass on to the Kremlin, along with other evidence of his cooperation with the Russian intelligence service.

‘Negotiations’ Are Traps – How Russia Tweaks Language to Deceive the West

Every concession framed as “diplomacy” is a village burned. Every time Western leaders repeat Russian “newspeak,” they become its amplifiers.

The man has been officially charged under Article 111, Part 2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code — high treason committed under martial law. He is currently in custody.

The SBU stated that the suspect faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
