Ukraine has opened its first criminal investigation into allegations two Russian Federation (RF) soldiers raped a Ukrainian woman after breaking into her home and killing her husband, Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said in a Tuesday evening, March 22, statement.

Venediktova said her office has substantial evidence two RF soldiers entered a private home village in the Brovary district to the north-east of Kyiv, shot to death a man living in the house, and then at gunpoint raped his wife.

The couple’s child was present at the time of the attack, she said.

A Wednesday statement from Ukraine’s Army General Staff (AGS) said that army intelligence has observed increasing incidents of looting and violence by RF troop, particularly in towns and villages where the RF troops believe local residents are hostile.

Ukrainian conventional and social media has widely published images and reports of RF soldiers looting stores and businesses, primarily for food and alcohol, but also stealing items like televisions and computers.

Western military analysts have said that the RF most likely intended a walkover victory against Ukraine lasting no more than three days, and neither supplied its troops, nor even explained to them what the should do and how they should feed themselves, if the fighting lasted longer than that.

Ukrainian partisans and special operations forces are complicating the RF’s army’s logistic problems by attacking fuel and supply trucks in behind-the-lines raids. According to alleged radio intercepts of RF soldier telephone calls with relatives back in Russia, RF soldiers near the front often have little option but to break into homes, because the RF army is struggling to supply them. Some recordings have attested to RF army standing orders to attack civilians and civilian infrastructure.
