Russian forces launched an unprecedented barrage of ballistic missiles at the Ukrainian capital early Sunday morning, July 19, killing at least one person and injuring 17 across multiple districts.
According to monitoring resources, Russian forces fired approximately 40 ballistic missiles – including Iskander-M, Zircon, and S-400 types – at Kyiv over a 40-minute period. This marks the highest number of ballistic missiles used in a single attack against the capital since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The strikes and resulting debris caused fires and structural damage across five city districts: Desnianskyi, Dniprovskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Solomianskyi.
The State Emergency Service (DSNS) in Kyiv confirmed one fatality and 15 injured, reporting that rescue operations are ongoing at several locations.
In the Shevchenkivskyi district, emergency crews extinguished fires that engulfed vehicles and a three-story building, and localized a fire in a non-residential structure. First responders recovered the body of the deceased individual in this district and conducted operations to free people trapped in the debris.
In the Solomianskyi district, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that missile fragments fell near a nine-story apartment building, shattering windows. Firefighters are currently working to extinguish a blaze in an office building, while fires in residential and non-residential buildings have been extinguished.
Russian Guided Bombs Strike Sumy and Kherson Region, Drone Hits Izyum
In the Sviatoshynskyi district, emergency crews extinguished a fire on the roof of a private residential building and rescued four residents. In the Desnianskyi district, fires at two non-residential locations were localized. In the Dniprovskyi district, fires were recorded involving vehicles, a non-residential building, and a dormitory.
The Kyiv City State Administration reported that the attack damaged the surface vestibule of the Lukianivska metro station. The station is temporarily closed, with trains on the green line bypassing it without stopping. Workers are currently repairing escalators and passenger automation systems.
Later, the National Police of Ukraine stated that the number of people injured as a result of the Russian military’s strike on Kyiv had risen to 17.
Strikes hit surrounding Kyiv region
The missile barrage also targeted the surrounding Kyiv region.
Acting Head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration Ruslan Oliinyk reported that strikes in the Bucha district caused multiple fires at warehouse and logistics facilities, injuring two people.
A man sustained multiple shrapnel wounds and was hospitalized, while a woman suffered from smoke inhalation and was treated on-site without requiring hospitalization.
Continued strikes in southern and central Ukraine
The bombardment of the capital followed a weekend of intense Russian strikes targeting civilian and infrastructure sites across southern and central Ukraine.
On Saturday evening, July 18, a Russian drone struck a multi-story residential building in the Korabelnyi district of Kherson. Kherson Regional Military Administration Head Oleksandr Prokudin reported that the attack injured five people, including two children.
Earlier on Saturday, a Russian jet-powered drone struck a critical infrastructure facility in the city of Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Local authorities confirmed that the attack ignited a fire and resulted in one civilian fatality.
In Odesa, Russian forces launched strikes against the city and its surrounding port infrastructure on Saturday. A coordinated strike hit a commercial vessel flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda in the Black Sea, killing one person and injuring three others while destroying port facilities.
Russian forces launched a secondary strike as emergency crews were responding to the initial attack, damaging specialized rescue equipment.
The attack on the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged ship marked the second incident involving a foreign vessel in the region within 24 hours. On Friday evening, a Russian missile strike on the Odesa port damaged a civilian vessel flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, injuring four crew members.
