The Surreal Reality of Ukraine’s Current Political Environment

The Surreal Reality of Ukraine’s Current Political Environment

International politics these days seems to be beset by disrespect, harassment and threats that seems to be getting worse with every passing day.

If the writer Franz Kafka were alive today, he probably would not be able to describe the state of international relations without falling into an even deeper depression than the one that forced him to write the novels “The Castle” and “The Trial”.

The absurdity that currently dominates international politics offers little hope of an end to the downward spiral.

Spider’s Web: A Technological and Operational Feat for Ukraine, But Also a Strategic One

The Ukrainian Operation of June 1, 2025, Has Long-Term Political Implications

Much has already been written about the prodigious operation carried out by the Ukrainian security services (SBU). Never before has such an operation been carried out, not only with the same modus operandi, but also with the same degree of destruction, at least since Pearl Harbor.

Forty-one Russian military aircraft were damaged and some destroyed, including several strategic bombers that Moscow is no longer able to rebuild. Thirty-four percent of Russian bombers were hit. Basically, 10 to 30% of Russia’s nuclear deterrent air force has been wiped out. All this is unprecedented.

Trump’s Misguided Criticism Ignores Russia’s Brutality and Ukraine’s Precision

Trump’s Misguided Criticism Ignores Russia’s Brutality and Ukraine’s Precision

The moral and strategic chasm is undeniable. While Ukrainian strikes on military targets are a defensive necessity, Russian terror bombing campaigns are in hopes of furthering its imperial ambitions.

On June 4, 2025, US President Donald Trump held a phone call with Vladimir Putin, later describing it as “good” but unlikely to yield “immediate peace.” Trump’s subsequent condemnation of Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian military targets as ‘escalatory’ reveals a dangerous misreading of the war’s dynamics.

While Ukraine’s Operation Spiderweb surgically targeted Russia’s war machine, Moscow’s deliberate targeting of civilians exposes the imperialist savagery of Putin’s campaign, underscoring that Ukraine’s fight is not just for survival but for the principles of freedom and sovereignty.

ISW Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, June 6, 2025

ISW Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, June 6, 2025

Latest from the Institute for the Study of War.

Key Takeaways from the ISW:

  • A senior Ukrainian official reported that the Russian military intends to seize half of Ukraine by the end of 2026. Russian forces are highly unlikely to be able to make such large advances in such a narrow time frame, given Russia’s current offensive capabilities and assuming that the flow of Western aid to Ukraine continues.
  • The Russian military command’s purported objectives for 2026 extend far beyond Russia’s formal territorial demands and aim to seize a significant part of central Ukraine and most of southern and eastern Ukraine.
  • Russia’s purported military campaign plans for 2025 and 2026 are consistent with long-standing Russian territorial objectives and recent statements by pro-Kremlin voices in the information space.
  • The Russian military is likely unable to achieve its purported 2026 objectives, given the significant manpower and materiel losses Russian forces have sustained over the last three years of war and the Russian forces’ inability to achieve operational maneuver on the battlefield. Putin’s theory of victory depends on the Western alliance backing Ukraine, abandoning Ukraine as a necessary condition to bring about this scale of advance
  • Russian forces conducted the second-largest series of missile and drone strikes of the war overnight on June 5 to 6.
  • Ukrainian forces conducted a series of drone strikes against Russian military facilities, airfields, and defense industrial base (DIB) facilities overnight on June 5 to 6.
  • Russia’s Central Bank lowered its key interest rate for the first time since September 2022, likely prematurely due to increased Kremlin pressure to project economic stability.
  • Russian forces recently advanced in Belgorod and Sumy oblasts and near Lyman and Velyka Novosilka.

Ukraine War ‘Existential’, Russia Says, Launching Revenge Strikes

Ukraine War ‘Existential’, Russia Says, Launching Revenge Strikes

Russia steals Ukraine’s line about their war being an exisitential one for the country under attack by its rapacious northern neighbor.

The Kremlin said on Friday the Ukraine war was “existential” for Russia, after it launched a wave of retaliatory drone and missile strikes that killed at least four people.

The comments are Moscow’s latest to dampen hopes for a breakthrough amid a flurry of meetings between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, as well as telephone calls between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, aimed at stopping the fighting.
