BRATISLAVA - Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Slovak PM Robert Fico on May 9, during Fico’s visit to Moscow for the Victory Day celebrations, Putin’s advisor Yuri Ushakov announced on Tuesday.
According to Ushakov, the two leaders will discuss “bilateral issues and international topics, including the situation in Ukraine.” He also noted that a total of 29 foreign leaders will attend the Moscow military parade.

The meeting will be the second time in less than half a year that the pro-Russian Slovak prime minister meets with Putin – the previous one took place on Dec. 22.
Fico will be one of only two European leaders present at the celebrations in Russia, alongside Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. His visit has drawn criticism both from the domestic opposition – with protests being planned on that day –, as well as from the EU.
Notably, EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas warned EU leaders not to attend, stating that any participation in the 9th May parades “will not be taken lightly on the European side,” as Russia is waging a full-scale war in Europe.
Kyiv has also warned against attending the 9 May events, noting that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of foreign officials, as security on Russian territory is Russia’s responsibility. It also cautioned against the participation of foreign soldiers in the parade.
