Russia hit an energy facility in the Poltava region and electricity infrastructure in Sumy, leaving part of the city blacked out.

During the night of Aug. 26-27, “the enemy carried out another massive terrorist attack using unmanned aerial vehicles on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure,” according to Ukraine’s Energy Ministry. Energy and gas transportation system facilities in six regions of Ukraine – Sumy, Poltava, Donetsk, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhia – were targeted.

On the same night, the Poltava region suffered from Russia’s attack on an energy plant, but the electricity was quickly restored.

Russia launched 95 Shahed drones and decoy drones overnight; 74 of them were either destroyed or neutralized by Ukrainian Defense Forces aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare, drone system units or mobile fire groups, Ukraine’s Air Force reported in its post on Facebook.

Drone attack cuts power to parts of Sumy

The drone strike on the outskirts of Sumy caused no casualties, according to Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Region Military Administration, in a Telegram post.

But the morning showed the city’s electricity supply was hit hard.

At 7 a.m. Kyiv time, the head of the Sumy City Military Administration, Serhii Kryvosheyenko, wrote in his Telegram post that parts of Sumy remain without electricity.

All water utility facilities were also without power but have been switched to emergency backup, Kryvosheyenko wrote. Healthcare facilities were also plugged in electricity power backups.

Hungary Says It Has Deal With Ukraine on Minority Rights, Ties It to EU Accession Talks

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that Hungary and Ukraine have reached a “comprehensive agreement” to broaden language, cultural, educational and political rights for roughly 100,000 ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region, following several weeks of expert-level talks. Kyiv has pledged to write the agreed measures into Ukrainian law, reflecting them in the EU accession action plan. Budapest indicated it would support opening the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine.

Sumy’s transport network, parts of which operate on electricity, also seemed to be down, according to Kryvosheyenko’s post: “18 buses and 7 battery-powered trolleybuses are currently operating. The schedule is being updated, and additional buses will be deployed shortly,” he wrote.

“All services are working to restore critical infrastructure as quickly as possible,” he wrote.

Poltava also suffered from Russia’s drone attack.

As a result of the attack, an energy sector facility was damaged, according to Volodymyr Kohut, acting head of the Poltava Region Military Administration.

“Last night, the enemy launched a massive attack on the Poltava region. Fallen debris and direct hits were recorded in the Poltava district. An energy sector facility was affected. An administrative building, vehicles, and equipment were damaged,” he wrote.

Power outages occurred for both residential and commercial consumers, but the fire is out and electricity restored, according to Kohut’s post on Telegram at 8 am Kyiv time.

Ukraine’s energy state-owned Naftogaz Group declined to comment about whether Naftogaz facilities were hit in Poltava.
