President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that Russia’s overnight missile and drone barrage on Ukraine’s capital was another deliberate attack on civilians and urged the world to respond with tougher sanctions.
Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Kyiv early Thursday, Aug.28, striking Kyiv with ballistic and cruise missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and waves of Iranian-made Shahed drones.

The assault left fires raging across the city, damaged residential buildings and infrastructure, and killed at least eight people, including a 14-year-old child, officials said. More victims may remain trapped under debris.
“Russia chooses missiles over negotiating table, killing over peace,” Zelensky said in a statement.
“This means Russia still does not fear consequences, as parts of the world continue to close their eyes to murdered children and look for excuses for Putin.”
The president called on China, Hungary and other nations that have previously urged a ceasefire to react strongly to the latest attack. “The death of children must trigger stronger emotions than anything else,” he said.
Zelensky also urged Western allies to impose new sanctions, saying Moscow must feel responsible for “every strike, for every day of this war.”
