Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha reported that as a result of Russia’s overnight missile strike on Aug. 28, the building of the European Union’s mission in Kyiv was damaged.

He wrote about this on social media platform X, noting that the attack also targeted diplomats, which he described as a blatant violation of the Vienna Convention.

“The EU mission to Ukraine was damaged. This requires not only the EU’s, but worldwide condemnation. We express solidarity with our EU colleagues and are ready to provide assistance,” Sybiha stated.

He stressed that Ukraine insists on a resolute international response to Russia’s brutal strike on Kyiv and other cities.

Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine’s capital early Thursday, Aug.28, striking Kyiv with ballistic and cruise missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and waves of Iranian-made Shahed drones.

The assault left fires raging across the city, damaged residential buildings and infrastructure, and killed at least eight people, including a 14-year-old child, officials said.

At least 38 others were wounded, with the number of casualties rising as rescue operations continued, Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed, adding that strike caused destruction in six districts of the capital: Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Desnianskyi.

Hungary Says It Has Deal With Ukraine on Minority Rights, Ties It to EU Accession Talks

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that Hungary and Ukraine have reached a “comprehensive agreement” to broaden language, cultural, educational and political rights for roughly 100,000 ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region, following several weeks of expert-level talks. Kyiv has pledged to write the agreed measures into Ukrainian law, reflecting them in the EU accession action plan. Budapest indicated it would support opening the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine.

A deadly Russian missile strike on Kyiv shows Moscow has no interest in “real diplomacy”, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media following the strike.

“Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table. It chooses to continue killing instead of ending the war,” Zelensky said on social media.

Ukraine expected a “reaction” from the world, including new sanctions, he added, specifically calling on Russia’s ally China and EU member Hungary to take strong stances.
