WASHINGTON DC – In a direct challenge to the Trump administration’s Ukraine policy, veteran Republican Senator Chuck Grassley is demanding that the return of thousands of kidnapped children abducted by Russia be a non-negotiable condition for any peace agreement.
Speaking on the Senate floor on Thursday, Grassley, who holds the title of President pro tempore, painted a grim picture of a humanitarian crisis that he said has been largely ignored.

Citing a Yale University estimate, the senior senator stated that more than 35,000 Ukrainian children are being held by Russian forces.
“The few who have been rescued tell horrific stories of Russian indoctrination, illegal militarization, and brutal punishment for refusing to give up their Ukrainian identity,” Grassley emphasized.
Firsthand Accounts of Indoctrination and Fear
The senator provided chilling firsthand accounts from children who were rescued by the organization Bring Kids Back Ukraine.
He recounted the story of Olekander, a 12-year-old boy from Mariupol, who said, “The Russians said that my mother did not need me and that I would be given to a foster family in Russia.”
Grassley also detailed the harrowing experience of six children who were taken to the occupied Crimean Peninsula for what was called a “rehabilitation program.”
He said they were “mocked in the camp, humiliated based on their nationality” and that Russian authorities “lock children like these folks who expressed pro-Ukrainian positions in a basement or an isolation cell.”

According to the senator, the children were “forbidden to speak Ukrainian and, instead, forced them to listen to the Russian national anthem, learn Russian patriotic songs, and to do hard work.”
He added that for at least six months, the Russians “lied to children that their parents had allegedly abandoned them and, in general, that Ukraine no longer needed these children.”
Direct Appeal to the White House
In a direct appeal to the Trump administration, Grassley insisted the issue of the children’s return must be at the forefront of any peace deal.
“As the Trump administration moves forward to secure a peace, we must not forget the plight of these children,” he said.
The senator noted his appreciation for First Lady Melania Trump’s “heartfelt letter urging Putin to release these kids,” and that he had heard Ukrainian President Zelenskyy had mentioned the letters in a recent White House meeting.
Grassley concluded with an uncompromising message. “So children should not become bargaining chips in the geopolitical negotiations,” he stated. “Their safe return must be prioritized before any final peace agreement is reached,” he added.
Grassley’s intervention carries significant weight. By leveraging his position as a senior Republican and a key figure in the Senate, he is attempting to reframe the debate around the war’s conclusion.
His demand is a clear signal that a peace deal that does not address the return of these children would be considered a moral failure by a notable faction of the Republican Party.
The move also elevates a humanitarian crisis that has been largely overshadowed by the broader geopolitical and military aspects of the conflict, shifting the focus from a discussion of territory and political influence to one of human rights and the protection of the most vulnerable.
