The United States has formally abandoned its role as a “neutral mediator” in Russia’s war against Ukraine and now defines itself as a partner of Kyiv, committed to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, as reflected in recent diplomatic texts.
According to the Clash Report, French President Emmanuel Macron said this on Thursday, during a briefing with reporters in Washington. He specified that the new US text, agreed with European allies, commits Washington to supporting Ukraine.

He described the shift as historic, saying “the US for the first time approved a text stating that they are no longer a neutral mediator, but stand with us on supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine, providing military assistance, energy support and sanctions against Russia.”
Macron’s unwavering support for Ukraine
Since the early phases of the Russian war against Ukraine, Macron has reportedly been one of the most risk-acceptant Western leaders on Ukraine – he even offered to send Western troops to Ukraine.
“We will do everything possible to prevent Russia from winning this war,” he said.
According to him, Europe must be ready to act even without the help of the US, insisting that the defeat of Russia is “indispensable” for Europe’s long-term security and that Western support must include deeper defense-industrial cooperation with Kyiv.
Simultaneously, in a joint message with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, he stated that “Ukraine can count on us,” tying continued military aid to a “just and lasting peace.”

US shifting its stance
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Ukraine is in the Americans’ “queue of wars.” With Iran being the number one issue for the US, in his view, Ukraine has visibly slipped down on Washington’s priority list.
Since then, US President Donald Trump has significantly changed his stance toward Ukraine, after the June 15-17 G7 Summit in France, where leaders agreed to intensify pressure on Moscow.
“He is doing pretty well. He’s holding his own, at least,” Trump said about Zelensky, despite previously saying he lacked the “cards” to win, signaling a shift in his view of Ukraine’s battlefield resilience.
“You have to say he’s courageous, he’s got great equipment,” Trump said, voicing a renewed interest in reimposing sanctions on Russian oil, a step already welcomed by many European allies.
Prior to the G7, Washington had imposed and then extended a sanctions waiver for Russian oil cargoes already at sea, troubling European allies.
