Despite calls from the UN and the entire civilized world for a ceasefire on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, Russia continues to shell the nuclear facility.

According to nuclear energy operator Enerhoatom, on August 11 the Russian army shelled the facility once again. Five strikes were registered on the plant’s command centre, right next to the welding area and a storage area holding sources of radiation. Sections of grass reportedly caught fire , but no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

At around the same time, five more strikes hit land beside a nearby fire department.

For the safety of nuclear staff, buses carrying personnel for the next shift were turned back to Enerhodar in Zaporizhzhia Region. The staff working the previous shift will continue to work until the situation finally normalizes. The situation at the station is currently under control.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres to send an international mission led by the International Nuclear Energy Agency and with the participation of the United Nations military experts to assess threats to nuclear safety as a result of the plant’s seizure by Russian forces in March.

UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for an end to hostilities in the area around the plant and the demilitarization of the perimeter around the nuclear power plant, as shelling could lead to a disaster.
